When people look out at the calm blue waters of San Diego Bay, they think of tourism and recreation. Yet, for thousands of people who work at the shipyards, boatyards and marine terminals, the waterfront is their workplace.
The working waterfront is a thriving hub of industry and commerce along San Diego Bay. Maritime industrial businesses build and repair ships, use San Diego Bay to keep goods moving in and out of the region and support the Navy’s San Diego presence.
The working waterfront provides jobs with family-supporting salaries and health insurance, along with job training programs for the local community. Working waterfront businesses help protect the environment with programs to prevent pollution and preserve our natural resources. Additionally, they serve as good neighbors to the local community, supporting schools and contributing to local programs.
Although the working waterfront’s history is strong, its future may be in jeopardy. Changing land uses and development along San Diego Bay could force these valuable businesses out of the region, which would have a devastating effect on the local economy, jobs, national security and our quality of life.
