When people look out at the calm blue waters of San Diego Bay, they think of tourism and recreation. Yet, for thousands of people who work at the shipyards, boatyards and marine terminals, the waterfront is their workplace.
The working waterfront’s important role is not fully understood by the San Diego region. The Working Waterfront Group is a coalition of water-dependent businesses and their supporters committed to preserving the industry's positive contributions to the region's economy, security and environment.
In addition to the businesses that depend on the waterfront, the group includes the AFL-CIO, which represents thousands of workers who have built life long careers at the working waterfront; the San Diego Port Tenants Association, which represents the breadth of businesses around the Bay; and the Port of San Diego, which is charged with managing San Diego Bay for the benefit of all Californians.
The group is administered by the San Diego Port Tenants Association in cooperation with the Port of San Diego and the AFL-CIO. The Working Waterfront Group is committed to working collaboratively with policy makers, regulators and the community to develop win-win solutions for the waterfront and the region.
“Maritime industrial businesses can only exist on the waterfront. Proposals to change land uses near the working waterfront, allowing residential development and other incompatible land uses, threaten our very existence,” said Sharon Cloward, executive director of the Port Tenants Association.
