Working waterfront businesses are committed to protecting the environment and fully comply with federal, state and local environmental laws. These businesses have taken a leadership position in protecting the environment by implementing pollution prevention, storm water management, air emission reduction and recycling programs. Many businesses have systems in place along the waterfront to collect storm water runoff, the leading cause of pollution in the bay.

Each year, Operation Clean Sweep draws more than 1,000 volunteers, including an average of 60 Navy and civilian divers, to join in the extensive tidelands clean-up efforts. Operation Clean Sweep is a community partnership between the Port Tenants Association, U.S. Navy, Port of San Diego, California Professional Divers Association, City of Coronado, Ship Repair Association including NASSCO, BAE Systems San Diego Ship
Repair and Continental Maritime, U.S. Coast Guard, Harbor Police and local volunteers.
“The first year we had the clean up, we filled eight or nine dumpsters with trash. Since then, each year we find less and less trash,” said Bruce Hollingsworth, president and CEO of the San Diego Unified Port District. “The areas focused on are the same each year, so volunteers were able to do a more thorough job, with less trash to pick up.”
